Grace You Cannot Purchase

When we have let someone down, we often want to make up for it quickly. We may bring that same instinct into prayer: perhaps a better week, more service, or stronger feelings will make us acceptable to God again.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight

Ephesians 1:7–8 (ESV)

Ephesians 1:7–8 directs our attention to Jesus. Redemption means being set free at a cost. Paul connects our freedom and forgiveness with Christ’s blood, the giving of his life for us. Our hope rests in what Jesus has done, rather than in a payment we can manage.

Forgiveness is a gift of grace, but it was not cheap. The cross shows both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s mercy. We do not need to minimise our wrongs in order to approach him.

That changes how we confess. We can name a sin honestly, without dressing it up or offering God a bargain. We turn from it and trust Christ. Where we have harmed someone, an apology or a practical act of repair may follow. Such obedience is a response to grace; it does not purchase forgiveness.

Today, bring one specific failure before the Lord. Resist the urge to balance it against a list of good things you have done. Ask for help to take the next faithful step, whether that is telling the truth, seeking forgiveness, or changing a habit.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for giving yourself for us. Help me confess honestly, receive your mercy with faith, and obey you with gratitude. Amen.
