Ephesians 4:3 (ESV)
eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
A misunderstanding can grow while the people involved speak to everyone except each other. Each retelling adds another assumption, until a small concern becomes a story that neither person recognises.
Paul calls believers to be eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit. Peace deserves active care. We express the unity God gives as we listen, speak truthfully, and resist the pleasure of gathering people to our side.
Before repeating a concern, pause. What do you know directly? What have you assumed? Are you seeking wise help, or simply an audience for your frustration? These questions can change the direction of a conversation before anyone is wounded further.
For an ordinary misunderstanding, a calm conversation with the person concerned may be the next faithful step. Describe the specific concern, ask how they understand it, and leave space for an answer. You may discover that you missed something, or that an apology is needed.
Peace never requires concealing abuse or facing an unsafe situation alone. Serious harm calls for appropriate support and accountability. Seeking help in those circumstances serves truth and care.
Choose one conversation this week that could become more honest and less defensive. Pray before speaking. Aim to understand and seek what is right, rather than winning the exchange.
Prayer: Spirit of God, help me care for the peace you give. Guard my words and make me willing to listen, acknowledge wrong, and seek truth. Amen.
