Ephesians 4:2 (ESV)

with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

Someone asks a question you have heard before. A new volunteer needs another explanation. A familiar difference in personality begins to irritate you. These small moments can reveal how much room we make for another person.

Paul describes patience as part of a life shaped by God’s calling. Bearing with one another in love means that another person’s unfinished growth does not cancel our responsibility to care. We also depend on patience from God and from the people around us.

Growth rarely moves at the speed we would choose. A gardener cannot make a seedling mature by pulling its stem. The illustration has limits, but it reminds us that steady attention serves growth better than impatience. People need truthful instruction, encouragement, and opportunities to practise.

Patience does not require accepting harm or leaving serious wrongdoing unaddressed. Love can include correction, appropriate boundaries, and help from others. Ordinary differences and honest mistakes, though, do not need to become reasons for contempt.

Notice one moment today when you are tempted to hurry someone along. Ask what they actually need. You may need to explain more clearly, allow another attempt, or acknowledge that your preferred method is only a preference.

Prayer: Patient Father, help me remember the grace I receive. Give me humility to make room for others and wisdom to care for their growth. Amen.
