Ephesians 4:12 (ESV)
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Doing a familiar task yourself may seem quicker than showing someone else. Yet a church can become dependent on a few experienced people if no one has room to learn.
Paul describes ministry that equips God’s people to serve and builds up Christ’s body. Leaders have a responsibility to prepare others. The wider church also benefits when experience is shared instead of guarded.
Teaching a task involves more than handing it over. Explain why it matters, demonstrate what is needed, and invite questions. Then give the learner a genuine opportunity to try. Stay close enough to help without taking control at the first small mistake.
Imagine arranging a room for a gathering. One person knows the layout well. Inviting another volunteer to work alongside them may take extra time today, but it builds understanding, confidence, and a relationship. The people being formed matter as much as the chairs being placed.
This principle also applies when you are the learner. Ask for guidance, arrive prepared, and communicate when something is unclear. Receiving instruction is one way to care for the people your service will affect.
Choose a suitable responsibility you could share. Offer a clear first step and a realistic amount of support. Keep any required training and safeguards in place.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us build people as we serve. Make experienced hands generous and learning hearts willing, so that your body grows in love. Amen.
