Matthew 11:29 (ESV, excerpt)

for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

Correction can make us defensive before we have even listened. We may expect to be shamed, dismissed, or measured only by what we got wrong.

Jesus describes his own heart as gentle and lowly. The one who calls us to learn from him is not careless with those who come to him. His authority and gentleness belong together.

Gentleness does not mean that sin is harmless or that truth no longer matters. Jesus calls people to repentance. Yet we need not imagine that harshness is the proof of holiness. We can bring our need for change to him without pretending that we have already mastered his way.

Think of the patient care of a skilled craftsperson shaping a bowl. This ordinary illustration cannot explain everything about discipleship, but it offers a useful contrast to the impulse to crush what needs shaping. Learning requires attention, practice, and a willingness to be corrected.

Today, notice how you respond when someone points out a mistake. Pause long enough to consider what is true. Acknowledge what needs changing without turning that moment into a verdict on your whole worth. Then practise the same patience when you need to correct someone else.

Prayer: Gentle Lord Jesus, teach me to receive your correction with trust. Shape my words so that truth and care remain together. Amen.
