John 13:35 (ESV)

By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

A welcoming notice can invite people through a door. What they meet inside gives that invitation substance. The way we treat one another says something about the Lord we profess to follow.

Jesus tells his disciples that their love for one another will identify them as his followers. In the preceding verse, he grounds that love in his own love for them. Christian care begins with what we receive from him and becomes visible in our shared life.

This witness is present in ordinary choices: making room at a table, keeping a promise, speaking respectfully, and noticing someone who stands alone. It also appears when we acknowledge failure and seek to put things right. A credible welcome does not require pretending that a church is perfect.

Our fellowship can become comfortable and closed if we only look for familiar faces. Love invites us to notice who is left at the edge. A newcomer may need an introduction, a simple explanation of what is happening, or someone willing to sit alongside them.

Care does not replace explaining the gospel. It gives a fitting setting for honest words about Jesus. We can offer friendship without treating people as projects or measuring kindness by an immediate response.

At the next gathering, look for one practical way to make room for someone. Let that welcome continue beyond the first greeting.

Prayer: Jesus, shape our life together by your love. Help our neighbours see patient, truthful care among us, and give us words that point to you. Amen.
