Matthew 11:30 (ESV)

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

A full day can leave us exhausted for more than one reason. Sometimes the work itself is demanding. Sometimes we are also trying to prove that we are useful, impressive, or beyond criticism.

Jesus speaks of his yoke as easy and his burden as light. These words follow his invitation to come and learn from him. They describe life under his gracious care; they do not promise a life without difficult duties, sacrifice, or opposition.

We can add burdens that Jesus has not given us. The need to win every comparison, control everyone’s opinion, or appear endlessly capable can turn even good service into anxious performance. Following Jesus calls us to faithfulness, not to maintaining an image of ourselves.

His rest is a gift. We do not earn it by becoming impressive disciples. As we receive his care and learn his way, we can begin to recognise the difference between a real responsibility and a demand created by pride or fear.

Look at one task on your list today. Ask what love and faithfulness actually require. Is there an extra layer of proving yourself that you can release? Do the necessary work with care, and allow another person to help where that is appropriate.

Prayer: Jesus, help me serve from trust in you. Free me from the need to impress, and teach me to carry today’s responsibilities faithfully. Amen.
