Freedom Has a New Direction

A familiar temptation can make yesterday’s progress feel unreal. We may wonder whether anything has changed when the same anger, envy, or dishonest impulse returns. Scripture gives us a firmer starting point than the strength of today’s feelings.

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Romans 6:14 (ESV)

In Romans 6:11–14, Paul calls believers to recognise their new life in Christ and offer themselves to God. Grace does not make our choices unimportant. It gives those choices a new direction: we belong to the Lord, and sin is no longer our rightful master.

Freedom from sin’s rule does not mean the absence of struggle. Temptation may remain. Growth may involve repeated confession and patient help. Yet we are invited to practise obedience from the freedom Christ gives, rather than surrendering to the claim that we can never change.

Make the response concrete today. Choose one setting where a harmful habit usually takes hold. If an online conversation feeds resentment, step away before replying. If secrecy protects a pattern of sin, ask a trustworthy, mature believer for help. If harsh speech has wounded someone, begin with a clear apology.

These steps do not earn redemption. They are ways of offering ordinary parts of life to God: our words, attention, time, and actions. Asking for support is not a failure of faith. It can be an honest expression of our need for grace.

Reflection: What is one practical change I can make today that agrees with my belonging to Jesus?
