Caring for People Christ Calls His Own

New Covenant Fellowship
Faith | Calendar Icon 01 October 2026

It is easy to notice what needs organising at church: a room, a rota, a message, a meeting. People can quietly become names attached to tasks. Scripture calls us to see them with greater care.

Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.

Acts 20:28 (ESV)

In Acts 20:28, Paul addresses the elders of the church in Ephesus. He tells them to watch over themselves and the flock entrusted to them. His instruction rests on something precious: the church belongs to God and has been purchased at the cost of Christ’s blood.

The immediate responsibility is given to leaders. A fitting response for the whole fellowship follows: people whom Christ values should not be treated as disposable. Their worth is not measured by how much they volunteer, how confident they appear, or how useful they seem.

For us, one practical response is to give someone unhurried attention. Listen before offering an answer. Ask whether a task has become too heavy. Notice a person who tends to be overlooked, without assuming you already know what they need.

Care also includes honesty. Valuing the church does not mean hiding wrongdoing or silencing someone who raises a concern. We need truth and accountability alongside gentleness. Protecting an image of harmony is no substitute for loving the people involved.

Today, choose one act of care you can offer freely. It might be practical help, a patient conversation, or prayer for a person carrying responsibility. Keep their dignity central, and respect their answer if they decline your offer.

Reflection: Who could receive my patient attention this week, beyond the task I usually associate with them?
